Why your Computer Runs Slow

Ever bought a new computer and slowly experience it slowing down over time. Suddenly, it takes ages to perform the simplest of tasks and can become quite frustrating. However, fear not, there are some solutions to make your computer run faster. First, we will discuss why your computer starts running slower?

Why your computer runs slower:

1: Limited Storage Space: Adding too many files into that hard drive of yours will get your computer worked up over time. The best solution is to clean out the extra files and folders you have saved every once in a while to make sure your computer has free space to run on.

2: Virus Attack: Another cause could be a virus attack which is making your computer operate slower while it damages your files. To prevent virus attacks you should have an anti-virus software downloaded.

3: Slow Broadband: A slow internet connection can always slow down your computer and you might not even know it. For this, run a broadband speed check to see your internet speed.

4: Outdated Software: Always dismissing that software update message wasn’t exactly the wisest decision you could make. Ignoring it once in a while won’t do any harm but update it within a few days as outdated software could be making your computer operate slower.

5: Downloading Large Files: You might have left a large file on download. That large file could be the reason why your computer suddenly slowed down to the speed of a snail. Keep track of what files you download.

6: Less RAM Available: A solution to less RAM availability is increasing your computer’s RAM. This will give your computer more space to operate on and will help it run faster.

7: Too Much Software: Having too many programs operating at once will also slow down your computer. Check which programs your computer is running and remove the unimportant ones.

8: Your Computer is Outdated: Old is gold won’t apply here. Keeping an outdated PC isn’t the best choice. Instead, you should probably get a new one as your old PC will not get any faster over time.

Easy Ways to Speed up your Computer:

Here we will discuss some basic easy ways to speed up your computer in a bit detail.

  • Updating Your Software:

As mentioned before, dismissing that software update reminder isn’t the best choice. Keep in mind that software developers constantly improve their programs to help your computer operate more smoothly. These will always help to remove bugs and make your computer more secure. To check if your computer is up to date simply open the Settings in Windows 10. Then click on ‘Updates and Security’ and click on the ‘Check for Updates’ button.

  • Running a Virus Check:

Always keep an anti-virus software downloaded or installed into your computer. Windows 10 included anti-virus as part of its latest release. So always make sure your program detects viruses immediately. Viruses could slow down your computer, but they can also exploit your data. To run a virus scan go to Settings >Updates and Security>Windows Security>Virus and Threat Protection. Here run a scan to detect any potential viruses.

  • Checking your Broadband Speed:

It could be your internet connection slowing you down. Or you might have left a large file on download. In this case, check your broadband speed by using Speedtest.net. If your connection is slow, simply upgrade your broadband speed.

  • Managing your Files:

Storing up too many files can cause your computer space to run out. At such cases, your computer cannot work as efficiently as before and come lagging to slow speeds in seconds. Always free up some space and uninstall the programs you do not require. You can always add external hard drives to save your files and to increase space.

  • Tracking your Programs:

Track the number of programs your computer is operating on at one time. Too many programs running at once can slow down your computer. You can check which programs are running that you don’t need. For this go to the Start button. Then click on Task Manager. GO to the ‘Startup’ tab to see the programs your computer runs the moment it starts up. Right-click and Disable any unessential programs.

Advanced Ways to Speed up your Computer:

  • Adding RAM:

RAM is a very integral part of your computer, it helps it to operate and multitask as once. The more the RAM, the faster your computer will operate. You can easily add RAM to your PC by opening up your PC or your laptop hatch and inserting the new Ram into its position. Check which RAM your computer is operating on by going to Settings>About. Make sure the RAM you buy is compatible with your computer.

  • Reinstalling/Refreshing your Windows:

Re-installing your windows or refreshing will work wonders on your PC. Before you re-install windows make sure to keep a backup of all your data. Also, you will have to re-install your programs after re-installing. To simply refresh your Windows instead of re-installing, and you won’t lose any files this way either. Go to Settings>Update and Security>Recovery. From here select the Refresh option. You will also see a ‘Fresh Install’ option. This will essentially remove everything and reinstall your Windows, however, you will lose your files.

  • Replacing your Hard Drive:

You can also replace your Hard Drive with an SSD (Solid State Drive). The hard drive installed in your PC can offer you space but slows down over time. In this case, you can replace it with an SSD which will speed up your computer. Installing an SSD isn’t easy and can be quite complicated and in some cases impossible i.e. some laptops. Before you do so, keep a backup of your files, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Replacing your Computer:

If you tried all of the suggestions given above and your PC still does not work any faster, then you should contact a professional. However, keep a backup of your data and get him to explain what needs to be done thoroughly.

The other choice and the only choice you have at this stage would be to get a new computer. Instead of wasting too much money and time on getting your PC to run faster, you might as well get a new one. It will not only run faster but last longer.
