Reasons Why Your Macbook Is Running Slow

Working on a slow Macbook can be a bit of a problem, especially when you have a deadline and cannot afford to waste any time.

A number of people experiencing this problem begin to wonder whether they ought to purchase a new Mac or switch to a different computer. But they do not realize that there are ways to solve the issue.

The cause behind Macbook’s sluggish performance varies from case to case, but the most popular reasons would include the ones you can find below.

Reason #1 – Lack of Disk Space

Running out of drive space is quite common, especially for those who like to keep their files on a computer rather than somewhere else. Macs do not come with large drives, which means that you need to look for ways around the problem.

For starters, there are quite a few junk files like caches, backups, extensions, and plugins. Using cleanup software to get rid of those is the best option since manually deleting such files is a bit dangerous as you risk removing something important to the OS. You can get more info on finding the best cleanup tool on the MacPaw website.

As for other ways of making more disk storage on a Mac, there is an option to transfer some data to Dropbox or iCloud. You can also delete old applications, and even subscribe to streaming services that will eliminate the need to keep large media files on the computer.

Reason #2 – Viruses and Malware

Various cybersecurity threats, like malware and viruses, could be the leading cause behind underperformance in your Macbook.

There is a myth that macOS does not need anti-virus. It is difficult to imagine why someone would believe such ideas. Even if you are actively avoiding shady links and never download unknown files, malware can strike when you least expect it.

Instead of risking the well-being of your computer and experiencing sluggish performance after a virus is already inside, have anti-virus software in the background. It will prevent threats and give you peace of mind.

Reason #3 – Desktop is Cluttered

Some Mac users like to put everything icon on a desktop without realizing how much of a negative effect it has on the overall performance.

Each icon has to be rendered whenever you switch from a desktop to another window. If you are in the habit of using your desktop as a place for everything, change that as soon as you can.

There are better ways to organize files and keep them in proper locations. The number of icons on a desktop should be kept to a minimum.

Reason #4 – Applications on the Startup Menu

Regular restarts are an excellent way to stop memory leakage and give the Mac a fresh start. But if you are restarting the computer a few times every day, make sure that the number of applications in the startup menu is not too high.

Waiting for apps to load every time is a bother. Trimming down the list is what you should do. Go to System Preferences and click on Users & Groups. Select your profile and navigate to Login Items.

Applications can be removed by clicking on the “-” button. When you shorten the list, save the changes. Restart the Mac, and you will notice how quickly it loads when there is no need to wait for multiple applications to load as well.

Reason #5 – Processes That Consume Too Many Resources

Solving the problem of power-hungry processes is one of the best ways to improve Macbook performance

Activity Monitor allows you to sort apps by CPU and memory usage. Look at the processes that are the biggest consumer of resources. Perhaps you can find some alternatives that are not so hungry? There may also be applications that are running in the background and can be shut off, or even removed from the Mac.

Reason #6 – Internet Browser Is Not Optimized

Internet browsers can become a big issue if you add too many extensions. Some people like to install extensions without overthinking, even if they do not offer any value and are only consuming valuable memory.

If you are experiencing the most problems while surfing the internet, it may be that the one at fault is not the computer, but your browser. Look to optimize it by removing irrelevant extensions and deleting caches. And in case the problem persists, consider trying an alternative browser.

Reason #7 – Lack of Updates

Even when they are relatively small, updates introduce stability and performance improvements. Getting the newest version of the macOS is a given, but even random applications will run smoother when they are up to date.

Reason #8 – Dust and Dirt

Filth like dust accumulates over time. After all, your Macbook is most likely static most of the time. You need to regularly clean the filth inside to prevent any potential threats to the internal hardware. When you hear loud fan noises and notice a sudden rise in the computer’s temperature, there is probably too much filth inside, and it needs to be cleaned up.
