Samsung’s new phone screen will have an ‘invisible’ camera
Quite recently, we have been hearing of the integration of Infinity-O displays. From Huawei to iPhone and Samsung, this has been quite the talk. But hold up. What are Infinity-O displays?
Infinity-O Displays
The infinity-o display is basically the virtually bezel-less screen which was first introduced in the Galaxy S8 and S8+. They are full-screen phones without any notches or holes giving a wider display. For this design, the sensors are moved under the display.
Reports from the Korean Yonhap News Agency have suggested that Samsung is working on making a phone where the selfie camera is hidden completely under the display. Something similar to the under-display fingerprint scanner of the Vivo X20 Plus UD and the Galaxy S10 series. The main focus is to create a full-screen smartphone where all the sensors and the camera are mounted below the screen.
According to Yang Byung-duk (V.P. at Samsung): ‘punching a hole in the OLED display is a challenging technology….thought it wouldn’t be possible to make a full-screen smartphone in the next one to two years, the technology can move forward to the point where the camera hole will be invisible, while not affecting the camera’s function in any way.’
How Does It Work?
However, this isn’t the first mention of a ‘full-screen’ smartphone, as pointed out by The Verge. During a presentation in October, the company discussed its ambition to put the front-facing camera under a future device’s screen. Providing details on how the camera would work, they explained the entire screen would work as a display when the camera is not in use. Whenever you need to take a snap, the screen would become transparent allowing you to see the camera.
Although this is an amazing ambition, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of it. There are reports of other Chinese-made phones who had introduced the under-display fingerprint scanner before it was introduced by Samsung. Not only this, the Honor’s View 20 already introduced the hole-punch display for the front camera, although Yang claims the Galaxy S10 was the first to do so with the OLED panel.
Conclusion:
There are no further details as to when the perfect ‘full-screen’ smartphone is to be released, but Yang did mention that it won’t be ready until the next year or so. But one thing is for sure, this isn’t going to stop us from getting excited!
